Dr. John Carpenter is the Observatory Scientist at the Joint ALMA Observatory in Chile. He is responsible for providing input on how best to optimize the scientific output of ALMA and he oversees the proposal review process, which determines the projects that will be scheduled on the telescope. His research is focused on understanding how planets form by imaging gas and dust in protoplanetary disks that surround young stars. In this event, we learned a little about his job, and his life outside astronomy.
